NV Energy has started construction of a $220,000 project to improve the reliability of electric service on the east side of Fernley.

Crews are replacing 25 power poles along Farm District Road and upgrading the wires that deliver 12,500 volts of electricity to Fernley homes and businesses, said Russell Groesbeck, who manages NV Energy’s Fallon office. (The Fallon service area includes Fernley in Lyon County and portions of Washoe, Churchill and Lander counties.)

Besides replacing aging poles and installing larger diameter wire, crews will be connecting the rebuilt power line to a second line in order to “loop” service to east Fernley, improving reliability, Groesbeck said. Both lines originate at a substation that’s located between Farm District Road and Highway 50.

Work on the Fernley project is expected to be completed by mid to late September. Brief power outages affecting a few customers in the Wedge Lane area near the Desert Lakes Golf
Course in Fernley will occur when the electrical circuit is transferred to the new set of poles.

NV Energy serves approximately 9,700 electric customers in Fernley.
