NV Energy is now offering rebates for natural gas customers in Reno and Sparks who want to use solar energy to help heat their homes.

Solar space heating systems usually consist of solar collectors installed on a south facing roof or wall that concentrate the sun’s energy to heat a fluid or air, and then transfer that energy directly into the home or into the home’s ductwork. The systems generally use electric fans or pumps to transfer and distribute the heat, though some simply rely on passive solar energy.

Residential gas customers, along with small businesses, schools and public buildings are eligible to participate in the new program.

Rebates amounts are as follows:

• Residential - $14.50 per therm or the lesser of 30 percent of the system cost up to $3,000
• Small businesses - $14.50 per therm or the lesser of 30 percent of the system cost up to $7,500
• Schools - $19 per therm or the lesser of 50 percent of the system cost up to $30,000
• Public buildings - $19 per therm or the lesser of 50 percent of the system cost up to $30,000

 “This program provides an opportunity for Nevada residents to add a renewable energy component to the heating systems for their homes and businesses,” said John Hargrove, manager of energy efficiency and conservation for NV Energy.

According to Hargrove, solar heating systems work in conjunction with existing heating equipment to reduce natural gas bills, and they require little upkeep and maintenance. Free Workshop on May 11

NV Energy and Southwest Gas are hosting a free workshop on solar space heating and solar water heating on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Ruby and Teton Rooms at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.
