Sierra Pacific Power Co. is warning customers that a possible telephone scam may be occurring in the Truckee Meadows regarding upcoming water utility refunds.
The company received a call June 13 from an elderly customer saying she had received a call from a person claiming to be a Sierra Pacific employee stating the company needed her social security number and address in order to complete the water refund. Sierra Pacific is not calling its customers requesting this type of information and calls of this nature may likely be a telephone scam.
In August Sierra Pacific will begin refunding some $21.5 million to water customers of record on June 1, 2001, as a result of the acquisition of the water business by Truckee Meadows Water Authority.
