For Immediate Release
Nevada Power Company reported a new record system peak of 4808 megawatts at 4 p.m. today. This exceeds the previous peak of 4789 megawatts recorded on July 11.
This is the third record peak established this year. The company said it is not unusual to exceed previous peaks during periods of extreme temperatures.
Increases in demand can be attributed to customer growth as well as weather factors. Nevada Power has more than 675,000 customers today, compared with approximately 630,000 customers one year ago.
Approximately ten years ago, the peak was 2,681 megawatts with a customer base of less than 400,000.
Tips to help customers stay cooler include using certain appliances (ovens, dishwashers, clothes dryers, etc.) during off-peak hours (8 p.m.Â- 11 a.m.) as well as running ceiling and oscillating fans to help increase airflow.
