Las Vegas, Nev. -- For the fifth time in seven days Nevada Power Company today recorded a new system peak of 5,587 megawatts, breaking the old record of 5,458 MW set yesterday.

The company said the prolonged, excessive heat is driving up air conditioning use, which accounts for higher usage. In addition, because of the increased demand on equipment, Nevada Power employees have replaced more than 200 transformers in residential neighborhoods since last Wednesday.

Customers can save energy and money by avoiding using appliances during the hottest part of the day, setting air conditioners at 78 degrees and turning off lights and computers when not in use. For more conservation tips, visit nevadapower.com.
