The Governor's Awards give recognition to innovative builders that are leading their industry in the construction of energy efficient homes. Energy efficiency is a key issue for affordable housing. The cost of heating and cooling a home in Nevada is the highest cost of home ownership after the mortgage loan. The same things that make a home energy efficient also make it a more durable and comfortable home. The 2005 winners also were given Energy Star certificates for voluntarily building homes that exceed the building energy code by over 30%. The 2005 winners are: I. Production Homes Up to $300,000 - DR Horton;  II. Production Homes Over $300,000 - D R Horton; III. Custom Homes - Holmes Construction; IV. Multi-Family Homes - Fore Properties

Several organizations joined with Sierra Pacific Power Company and the Office of the Governor to sponsor the award: the Nevada Office of Energy, the Builders Association of Northern Nevada, Energy Rated Homes, Fannie Mae, and the U.S Department of Housing& Urban Development.
