Vandals over the weekend used shot gun slugs and a high powered rifle to shoot at Sierra Pacific Power's Eagle Substation north of Interstate 80 in Fernley and nearby power transformers causing approximately $20,000 worth of damage to utility equipment.

The incident was reported to Sierra Pacific on Monday, February 5 and utility officials suspect the vandalism happened over the weekend.

"Thankfully we had no reports of injuries and no power outages as a result of the vandalism,"said Robert Kofoed, area service manager for Fallon Operations, which covers the Fernley area where the incidents took place.

However, Kofoed said some 6,000 Fernley and Fallon customers receive their electricity from that substation and senseless acts of vandalism can knock out power to customers and be very costly to repair.
