Nevada Power Company, a subsidiary of Sierra Pacific Resources (NYSE:SRP), has received the 2008 Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Advocacy Excellence Award for the company's Energy Assistance Expo. The company was recognized during a special ceremony in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The expo was held during the summer of 2007 and attended by more than 2,000 individuals in the Las Vegas area. The event helped connect people in need of assistance with the appropriate help-based organizations. Goals of the event included educating families about the importance of conservation and energy efficiency to provide long-term solutions as well as assisting customers in the near-term with financial assistance.
Nevada Power brought together 13 different community agencies, among them the Nevada State Welfare Division, Clark County Senior Advocates, Clark County Social Services, Nevada Association of Latin Americans, HELP of Southern Nevada and Lutheran Social Services.
"Nevada Power's commitment to addressing the needs of southern Nevadans who find it difficult to pay for their electrical needs was the catalyst for creating the expo,"said Michael Yackira, president and chief executive officer of Sierra Pacific Resources. "Offering a one-stop location made it much more convenient for our customers to receive the help they needed and due to the overwhelming response, we expect to make this an annual event."
Doretha Graham-Easler, community relations manager for Nevada Power said,"Because of the success of this first-ever energy expo, Nevada Power and our community partners plan to hold another event during the coming year. Our sister company, Sierra Pacific Power, is considering a comparable event in northern Nevada."
The expo is part of Nevada Power's Project REACH (Relief through Energy Assistance to prevent Customer Hardships). In 2007, Project REACH provided $379,483.48 in aid to low-income southern Nevadans.
