At Carson City's first Senior Expo, seniors from throughout the region can learn what programs are available to make their lives better. Health and Prosperity Are in Your Future is the theme for the event, co-sponsored by NV Energy and the Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Seniors living in Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County and Storey County are welcome to attend, and senior centers in those counties may be assisting with transportation.

Over 30 organizations will be represented at the Expo, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gymnasium at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William St., in Carson City. Along with NV Energy and RSVP, participating organizations will include AARP, the State Energy Assistance Program, Lyon County Human Services, the Nevada Division of Aging and Disability Services and Southwest Gas. (A complete list of participating agencies is attached.)

"These are difficult economic times, especially for seniors,"said Mary Simmons, vice president of external affairs for NV Energy."The winter heating season, and higher utility bills, can be financially stressful, so in cooperation with RSVP we've brought together in one place a variety of organizations with programs and services to assist seniors as well as people with disabilities."

At the Expo seniors can apply for assistance to help pay their utility bills or programs to make their homes more energy efficient. In addition, people attending the event can sign up for other money-saving community, medical and social service programs.

Anyone planning on applying for financial assistance with utility bills at the Expo should bring their Nevada driver's license or a Nevada State ID and their NV Energy electric bill.
